25 Years Ago Today- Bassiest Allen Woody (Gov’t Mule, Allman Brothers Band) Dies at 44
25 years ago today (8/26/00), Allen Woody, the bassist for Gov’t Mule and formerly the Allman Brothers Band at the time, passed away at age 44. Woody joined The Allman Brothers Band along with his soon-to-be musical partner, guitarist Warren Haynes, upon the group’s reunion in 1989. Woody and Haynes formed Gov’t Mule in 1994 with drummer Matt Abts, and the trio soon became not a side project but a full-fledged, full-time power trio. With Woody’s thunderous bass playing, Mule in the late ’90s was one of the premier rock bands, just when the classic built guitar, drums, and bass model was running dry, as the self-titled debut (1995), Dose, and Life Before Insanity still rank amongst the top three in the Mule studio discography.
