45 Years Ago Today – Kurtis Blow Releases Debut Album & First On A Major Label
45 years ago today (September 29, 1980), Kurtis Blow released his self-titled debut album, a pioneering work in hip-hop. The debut holds an important place in hip-hop history as one of the very first full-length rap albums released by a major label (Mercury Records). Blow had already made waves the year before with “The Breaks,” which became a groundbreaking single—one of the first rap songs to earn Gold certification and still one of the most iconic old-school tracks.
